What are big pips

Post by Tsiory »

Je vois des revêtements sur les sites web chinois appelés « gros picots ». Je ne sais pas ce que ça veut dire.
Désolé, mon anglais est un peu juste.

I see some rubbers in Chinese websites called big pips.
Not sure what that means
Sorry my english fair

"Big pips" is sort of misnomer because they are referring to actual long pimples.
The social pips on ITTF LARC have maximum allowed pip length of 2.05 mm & Aspect Ratio of 1.1
The big pips you are talking about are actual long pips with pip lengths longer than 2.05 mm & Aspect Ratio better than 1.1

I thought ITTF allowed pips with Aspect Ratio of upto 1.3

You thought wrong LOL

ITTF reduced the maximum allowed Aspect Ratio from 1.3 to 1.1 in 1998
This was done to ensure that the slim (flex) pips used by all the top choppers can only have pips that have to be wider.
Wider pips provide less (back) spin reversal.
But these are not rubbers classified as wide pips (called "out" on ITTF LARC ) .
Wide (stiff) pips have upper Aspect Ratio limit of 0.89 in ITTF.
Wide (stiff) pips are rubbers meant for block and smash styof play & strictly forehand rubbers.
Wide (stiff) pips are generally used by very few shakehand pro players on forehand though there are lot more penholders including a few World Champions.
