Historical note & little known fact :- The acquisition of DejaNews by Google in 2001 (early days on the internet) may be one of the most brilliant in history & Google's most significant.
Interestingly Google groups is kind of dead now as is the USENET itself, which was one of the earliest 5 components of the internet itself LOL
Individual topic specific discussion forums have replaced Google Groups for the most part such as the IOCTT.com itself or other ITTF worship forums such as OOAK, MyTT, TableTennisDaily (though TTD is illegal due to booster sub-forum) etc
Here are the 5 components if you may be interested
1. World Wide Web (WWW) : Developed in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee (& claimed by Al Gore LOL), it introduced hypertext documents and web browsers, transforming the way we access and share information.
2. Gopher: Invented in 1991 at the University of Minnesota, Gopher was an early system for organizing and retrieving documents over the internet, using a menu-based interface.
3. Email: One of the first applications on ARPANET, email gained widespread use in the 1970s and became a cornerstone of digital communication. Protocols are SMTP and IMAP/POP3
4. NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) Launched in the 1980s, this protocol was used to distribute and retrieve posts in Usenet newsgroups—a precursor to online forums.
5. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) : An essential tool for transferring files between computers, it facilitated collaboration and sharing in the early internet.
Most people confuse the internet as to be just being only WWW mostly because items 3,4 & 5 above are now available via WWW and item 2 (Gopher) is all but dead
