2011-born girl with Dornenglanz OX – 12 days to tournament

Post by Longpipsgirl2011 »

My daughter was born in 2011 and has only really started taking table tennis seriously during the last year.

She wants to get into a Swedish table tennis high school and for that she needs results. Right now she is around number 10 in Sweden among girls born in 2011 and she needs to get close to top 4 within about three months.

She plays long pips OX on the backhand and inverted on the forehand.

Blade: Stiga Cybershape Allround
Backhand: Spinlord Dornenglanz OX
Forehand: Stiga DNA

She does not have a coach who knows long pips. We have a good coach, but he does not know this kind of game. Most of the help around her comes from me, her dad.

We live in a very small place and there are not many people here who really focus on table tennis.

The strange thing is that she can play very well against men and strong junior boys. This video is from Swedish Division 3 last Saturday. There are players in the series who are much stronger than most girls her age and she can play quite evenly with some of them.

Then she can go to a tournament and play another girl and suddenly become tense and play much worse.

I think one problem is that she knows very little table tennis theory. She mostly just plays.

She wants so much, but she also gets frustrated very quickly in training. If something does not work straight away she can decide after a few balls that it does not work and then she does not want to practise it.

If she gets two good balls instead, everything can suddenly turn the other way. Haha.

I want her to understand every small detail. Feet, toes, balance, body, contact with the ball, racket angle, fingers, placement, spin and what she should think about before the next ball.

But she is not very receptive when it comes from me.

If I tell her that she needs to think she says: “You always tell me to think. Think about what?” Haha.

My thought is that she needs to understand that all the power is in her. She can read, ask questions, watch videos, film herself and find things out herself.

I would like her to start thinking: “How do I make my forehand better?” Then read about it because she wants to know. Then she goes to training and wants to practise it because the idea came from her.

I think she would also get much more out of a coach if she understands more herself. Then she can have a real conversation with the coach, ask questions and maybe sometimes even teach the coach something herself.

I want her to be hungry to learn.

I also agree with people who have already told me that she needs quicker feet and a better forehand topspin. I want a thinner contact and more spin instead of hitting so flat.

The long pips need work too. Chop block, placement, what to do against topspin and what the next ball should be.

In 12 days she plays Ängby International. I would like to work one detail at a time until then.

What would you start with?

If you watched the video, what is the first thing you would teach her now?

And how would you get a girl like this to become curious herself and want to understand the theory behind her own game?

Here is the video from last Saturday:

And this is the YouTube channel:

I can record more videos too. Matches, training and also the mistakes, not only the good points. I can ask her questions in the videos and let her answer herself.

If you want to follow this and help us, please subscribe to the channel and like the video too. I would really like her to start reading some of the answers herself and slowly take more responsibility for her own table tennis.

Very true.
Especially since she is only just blocking on the backhand and not attacking on the backhand
She needs a blade that has a slower softer backhand layer composition to maximize backspin (reversal)

She needs to learn the side swipe.

Also she is not twiddling at all.
She needs to learn to twiddle and put away loose balls with faster punch blocks down the line if the opponent is crowding their backhand corner.

watch Manika Batra's videos
She is the absolute master of twiddled blocks

If I were you I would order all the Chinese pips such as Saviga, Dawei , Yinhe, Meteor , Double Fish etc. in OX versions & she must test them.
They are inexpensive compared to European and Japanese pips unless you want to try them as well such Tibhar Dtec OX, SpinLord etc.
This would also keep her interested and getting bored with same rubber

because there aren't specialized coach for long pips....
I thought there would be thousands of pips coaches in Sweden ........more than in Africa

Sorry I could not resist :D

Seriously most European grip slim pips coaches have to be in India & Asian grip in China
